Literacy: Mrs. Fleming Essay

There are few fundamental skills in life that are of greater importance than the ability to read and understand the written word. It can take a person of any background as far as they can dream. This is truly evident in the essay, â€Å"Superman and Me†, by Sherman Alexie which tells of the author’s struggle growing up poor on a Native American reservation in Washington State. From a young age, his literacy became Alexie’s saving grace, thanks to his father who inspired him to begin reading. This inspiration changed the path of his life. I, too, was inspired and encouraged at a young age to be a great reader by my Mother and a special teacher. I am thankful to my Mother for starting me on my path to literacy. I grew up in a house full of books, music and loud women. My Mom was never without a book in her hand, my middle sister loved to sing and write poetry and my oldest sister always had her eight tracks blaring. From the time that I was tiny, I wanted to be just like my Mother. She had beautiful hair, perfect makeup, and lovely flowing dresses. Since I was too young for these things, I latched on to something else that my mother loved; books. Alexie felt much the same way about his Father. Alexie writes, â€Å"My father loved books and since I loved my father with an aching devotion, I decided to love books as well† (89). My Mother and I spent many hours roaming the library aisles for our next great read. She encouraged me to try new authors and different genres. I discovered Judy Blume and even attempted Charles Dickens and Louisa Mae Alcott. My Mom challenged me each summer to read as many books as I could and she was always ready for me to tell her all about them. Mama and I still recommend books to one another and tell each other all about the characters that we meet in between the pages of our latest book. I was fortunate enough to have many fantastic teachers during my school years. One teacher In particular is my sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Fleming. I was a twelve year old girl that felt awkward and self-conscience and Mrs. Fleming always found a way to boost my self-confidence. She made  it a point to compliment me every day on anything from how I read aloud in class or what I was wearing or my hair style. Mrs. Fleming’s interest in me built up my self-esteem by leaps and bounds. We also bonded over our mutual love of books. Mrs. Fleming would take the time to ask about a book I was reading and recommend others that she thought I might like. She found ways to let me know that she loved that I was so excited about reading even if it was just a sweet smile that seemed like it was just for me. Mrs. Fleming made me feel special. As an adult, I have, on occasion, run in to Mrs. Fleming and even after all these years she still remembers me as her little bookworm. I am thankful to have had the support and encouragement throughout my life to keep me reading and learning. It continues today as I show my children how fun and entertaining it can be to read a good book I love to read with my girls and the sound of their voice reading on their own is like music to my ears. As I continue my education I hope that they can see through me that a love of reading can take you anywhere you want to go. So dream big†¦and go read a book!

These strategies can be examined under (a) product life cycle (b) product price level and (c) product diversification. Samsung followed a reverse order if we look from the product life cycle perspective. It started its operation in 1971 with manufacturing monochrome televisions which were in the declining stage in  the advanced market. It then went on to manufacture colored televisions in 1977 which had already reached the mature stage in the PLC in other markets. It tapped the videocassette recorder (VCR) and microwave ovens (MWO) in its growth stage in the market by bridging the technology gap and reaped revenues. In early 1990’s SEC manufactured niche products such as DRAMs and digital videodisk (DVD) and entered this market in its introductory stage through agility, innovativeness and creativity. In 1992, Samsung became the market firm to many companies by being the largest producer of memory chips and second largest chip maker in the world only after Intel. Through innovation Samsung manufactured its first liquid screen display in 1995 and within ten years became the world’s largest liquid-crystal display panel. Tapping the smart phone market in the growth stage, Samsung became the world’s largest phone maker by unit sales in the 2012. From the price perspective Samsung started manufacturing products that were low end of the price range and then gradually moved up to the niche end products using innovation and high end technology. Starting from low end products was a strategic choice as there was low national income and the market had limited purchasing power, the JV partners were unwilling to share their technology and the availability of a niche market in US for the low end models. Samsung product path choice has moved from commodity product to high end niche product market as it now captures the global market. Samsung has strategically limited its diversification in the electronics-related area only. It follows a related product diversification strategy. It started with consumer electronics and home appliances, and then moved to personal computers and peripherals, communication equipment, semi-conductor and then mobiles. With the aim of capturing the strategic fit by sharing technology and management, in 1998, SEC merged with Samsung Semiconductor & Communications. In 2006, Sony & Samsung formed a JV S-LCD Corporation to co-operate and provide a stable LCD supply to both the manufacturers. These diversifications have helped Samsung get a balanced revenue structure from its products. Phase 5: Attaining technological competence whereby product and process innovation start to appear throughout the company. During this process Samsung made serious efforts to develop its own product design competence. It started to increase in-house R&D budgets and stepped up its efforts to assimilate advanced foreign technologies and to develop new product. Having successfully caught up with foreign technologies for most conventional consumer-electronics products, SEC’s management accelerated its technological capability from reverse engineering to innovations in advanced consumer electronics, PCs and peripherals, semiconductors and communications equipment. To support this strategy, Samsung increased its R&D budgets. There was an accelerated gap reduction from the other major competitors of the world. The accelerated gap reduction may be attributed to the synergy effect of three factors: In-house R&D capability with a critical mass of more than 7,300 researchers. Availability of multiple technology sources, such as licensing. Technology alliances with advanced companies, overseas research centers in advanced countries, and foreign high-tech companies owned by Samsung. Intensity of effort by management and personnel in research and product development. Samsung is one of the leaders in OLED display research and the clear leader in AMOLED production. OLED Displays are thinner, more efficient and offer better picture quality than LCD or Plasma displays. A lot of research is being done on Innovative WLAN technology from Samsung Electronics for the wireless business environment to remove the issues with have with the existing WLAN. Manufacturing Dimension Manufacturing system was the third dimension that the Samsung controlled. Samsung always wanted to benefit from the economies of  scale and scope. They had two strategies that is to either get vertically integrated to support the mass production of television or alternatively, depend on CKD’s from joint partnership and other suppliers from Japan. The main reason for this strategy was because of the lack of capability to produce the parts locally. However, Samsung soon realized that the foreign tie ups involved huge risk and transaction costs and hence decided to go with the minimally integrated manufacturing system locally. Hence Samsung built a cathode ray plant, a parts and components plant and CRT glass plant. In 1980’s, a large number of independent small and medium sizes businesses mushroomed due to technology assimilation in Korea. Now, Samsung was so good in technology and quality that they could start outsourcing anywhere and anytime. The Samsung started its overseas production base. The first  location was the Portugal and by 1995 they had twenty bases globally which accounted to a huge economies of scale and scope. The Samsung was sensitive to the changing needs of customers and hence moved from mass production to flexible manufacturing system to accommodate a new product strategy by late 1980’s. Samsung introduced in multiple product models to meet the fast changing demand of the people thereby man aging shorter product life cycles and competition. In early 1990th Samsung was still perceived as a conservative manufacturer and always associated with bargains. Samsung realized that with its low  pricing strategy it can only compete in the lower market segment whereas in upscale market technology and brand are competitive means. Samsung then onwards decided to penetrate the upscale market and gave up lower-market in order to exalt its brand image. It repositioned all series of its products such as mobile phone, consumer electronics and memory flash to upscale market. Corresponding to Samsung’s new position in the market it has relatively higher price in its category. Higher pricing would bring more profit and at the same time improves the brand image. Samsung is now developing products for the Indian market and tailored to their needs. Apart from price, another important factor which was strategically exploited by SEC was the concept of speed management by emphasizing on good decisions and fast implementation. It is a known fact that when employees are unsatisfied with their current job, productivity decreases, tension builds up in the work environment, and morale is low. Most organizations have motivational programs that provide useful tools to increase motivation, and reduce employee turnover. There are many strategies that are used to influence employee loyalty and these are intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is one’s personal development, self-control over their work without reward. Whereas, extrinsic motivation is having external incentives, pay bonuses, time off, these are some common strategies used to motivate and individual to complete or do a task. I work for a organization mostly based on customer service and to provide nursing care for long-term residents and rehabilitation following a hospital stay; and assisted living communities. As an employee, I am a member of the nursing staff department. Some of the motivational strategies used at Trisun are competitive salaries, health benefits, sign on bonuses, and employee perks. Recently, their census has been very low, so now employees have to take longer lunches or downsized. Thus, they want employees to work shorthanded but at the same time still have the same responsibilities. This tactic only makes employees frustrated and unmotivated to be productive. Only when you reward employees, they become happier, stay longer, and become more productive at the workplace. Many organizations fail to recognize that money is not the biggest factor in motivating employees. An engaged employee comes in early, reaches out to other employees, smiles, and has great customer service. On the other had you have an disengaged employee and they come in late or absent, and doesn’t want to be bothered with and most always leaves right at five. Successful business should have only one kind of employee, engaged. The process is to reward, recognize, and keep those behaviors among employees. If you don’t recognize those behaviors, you won’t get them back. People think that more money is better than a closer parking space. That is not always true. Depending on what you do, even the smallest perk can be bigger than a bonus and would be more valued. There are whole ranges of factors that motivate people. Many organizations have surveys to find out what really motivates employees and learning their values. Are they motivated in intrinsic or extrinsic theories, do they like more money, status, rewards, or do they value what people think of their work instead. Management can sometimes be pulled in different directions, so it is good that other employees see you working hard and are recognized by your supervisors. The two motivational theories that are not used in practice in this workplace were the Goal-setting Theory and the Cognitive Evaluation Theory. Cognitive evaluation theory is the event in which affects individuals’ feelings and self-determination will affect their intrinsic motivation. By using this theory, it will help employees feel self-determined, competent, and intrinsically motivated. Secondly, Goal-setting Theory was not used in the workplace. This theory explains that individuals are able to reach a defined objective. Sometimes this is a reward in itself and primarily a goal’s ffectiveness is implemented by three factors; specificity, proximity, and difficulty. Another theory self-efficacy will enhance an individual’s to achieve the goal. By using the self-efficacy, it will give positive feedback and have impact on applying the goal-setting theory in management and increase productivity. The most noted theory would be Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The Needs model is where each need is set on a basis of the strength of need. The human needs are physiological, Safety, Social, Esteem, and Actualization. Physiological need is the highest strength and is essential for survival. These form every human motivation and fulfilled more than any other human need. Motivation Strategies The highest levels of motivation for employees are individuals who empower workers, have an effective rewards system, redesign jobs, and create a more flexible work environment. Empowerment is to design the worker to become more responsible and encourage accomplishing a given task. Providing an effective rewards system is to reinforce employee behavior and the reward is when outcome is positive for the individual. There are two ways to receive rewards: Extrinsic rewards are common in the workplace, which are pay bonuses, promotions, time off, and verbal praises. Intrinsic rewards gives people a â€Å"natural high† when completing a job. It gives them a certain personal development and self-control over their work. Managers need to realize that all people are different; managers must provide a range of rewards, time off, recognition, and promotion. Redesigning jobs is a concept that will help employees not get bored with their everyday routine. One attempt would be job enlargement, which increases the job tasks decreases boredom. Job rotation is a practice which people can do different tasks and at the same time be exposed to new interest in the workplace. Job enrichment also includes tasks with more responsibility and authority. In today’s busy world employees value their personal time. Therefore, having a flexible schedule always helps employee’s needs. A full-time job is 40-hour workweek, so most employees get three days off which benefits the individuals lifestyle and give more leisure time and lowers commuting cost. Lastly, job sharing and twinning is when one full-time job is split between two or more people. Job sharing involves working only half a day, thus organizations benefit by employing people who wouldn’t otherwise be a unable to work full-time. In this paper, I explained different motivational strategies that affect productivity in the workplace, and analyzed two theories that are not in affect at my job. I explained organizational efforts to improve performance. By applying these theories and strategies will influence both management and employees to be motivated and be more productive at the workplace.
